Build Your Career in Utility Construction
For people who enjoy hands-on work, teamwork, and building essential infrastructure, utility construction offers a career path with real opportunity. The underground utility industry plays a critical role in connecting communities through fiber networks, power systems, and water infrastructure — and it relies on skilled crews to make those projects happen.
Unlike many industries where career paths are unclear, utility construction provides a clear progression. Many professionals begin working in the field and grow into equipment operators, foremen, and project leaders over time. As demand for underground infrastructure continues to grow, skilled workers in this field are more valuable than ever.
For individuals looking for a career that combines physical work, technical skill, and long-term growth, underground utility construction offers a strong foundation.
Why Utility Construction Is a Strong Career Path
Utility construction is a field where effort, reliability, and skill development are rewarded. Projects require coordination, precision, and problem-solving. Crews depend on each other to get the job done safely and efficiently. Some of the reasons people choose careers in this industry include:
Steady demand for infrastructure work: Fiber networks, utility upgrades, and new development projects continue to expand across the country. Skilled crews are needed to install and maintain these systems.
Opportunities to develop specialized skills: Technologies like horizontal directional drilling (HDD) allow workers to operate advanced equipment and gain expertise in trenchless construction methods.
Clear paths for career advancement: Many field professionals start as laborers and grow into drill operators, supervisors, and crew leaders as they gain experience.
Work that has visible impact: Utility crews build the infrastructure that communities depend on every day — from internet connectivity to essential services.
A Specialized Path: Horizontal Directional Drilling
One of the most in-demand skills in underground utility construction is horizontal directional drilling (HDD). HDD is a trenchless construction method used to install underground utilities with minimal surface disruption.
Drilling crews use specialized equipment to guide a drill head underground along a planned path before pulling conduit or pipe back through the bore. This technique is widely used for fiber installation and other utility projects where traditional trenching would be disruptive or impractical.
Working in HDD operations allows individuals to gain experience with advanced equipment, drilling techniques, and underground construction planning.
Opportunities at Modus Utility Group
At Modus Utility Group, our crews focus on underground utility construction with a strong emphasis on directional drilling and trenchless methods. We’re always looking for hardworking individuals who want to build their careers in this industry. Currently, we are hiring for several field positions that support our drilling operations.
DRILL CREW LABORER
This role is often the starting point for individuals entering the underground construction field. Laborers support the drill crew by helping with equipment setup, site preparation, and maintaining safe job site conditions while learning the fundamentals of HDD operations.
DIRECTIONAL DRILL OPERATOR
Drill operators work directly with HDD equipment to execute bore paths and install underground utilities. This role requires technical skill, attention to detail, and strong coordination with the rest of the drilling crew.
DRILL CREW FOREMAN – HORIZONTAL DIRECTIONAL DRILLING (HDD)
Foremen lead the drilling crew in the field and oversee the execution of HDD projects. This role requires experience with directional drilling, strong leadership, and a commitment to safety and project quality.
